What is Wonderly?
Wonderly will say it’s a lot of things. If you ask me Wonderly is a targeted vertical to create a network effect between several youtube channels. Wonderly is the start of people giving up on youtube and it’s ability to effectively promote the channels of smaller content creators.
Some times I wonder what youtube is doing. You subscribe to channels and then on the homepage it shows you videos from similar channels but not the one you asked for. It make zero sense as far as the user is concerned but I guess make sense for youtube to take your “subscription” as more of a suggestion and funnel your views to more profitable videos.
Channels involved in wonderly are not getting the love that bigger youtube channels are getting. So they need to band together and try and build a community that will boost views on their own.
Starting a website and community is really hard though. Will the channels involved drive enough traffic to the site? Will the channels find a way to feel unified and raise everyone’s viewership? Can the site figure out the seo to get extra views?
This is a move away from youtube though. It’s a move that says they can’t depend on the youtube platform to generate traffic and community. While networks are enjoying some good growth in such a young industry they are keenly aware how tightly they are hitched to youtube’s own success.
I hope they succeed and find way of supporting small content creators in stead of pushing them out of the way for bigger channels like youtube seems so intent to do.
